The year has gone quite quickly and BOOSA, for this year, has come to an end. The Final Social was the BOOSA Quiz! With all sections of the department in attendance, the quiz was a massive success! Following the quiz it was time for ice cream. The evening was enjoyed by all who attended. It was a social to end all socials

Today, Leeds LOC came in to talk about the LOC and the structure of the LOC network around the UK. They stressed the importance of the work the LOC does in the community, from working with the NHS and local practitioners to better the care provided to patients. The LOC speakers also talked about local issues in optometry including the future of services provided by practitioners, GOS sight test and the changes made to the structure of the NHS. Overall, the talk was very much enjoyed by all those who attended. Today Essilor came to Bradford. The talk concerned Essilor's products and services. Discussing the lens manufacturer's range of products including their premium UV protective lenses. The speakers also discussed their support for independents as well as their succession programme. The talked was very well received by all those who attended. Today, representatives from the Association of Independent Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians came in to talk about independent optometry market. Former Chairman of the AIO, David Beaumont led the lecture by explaining the drastic change in the Optical market resulting in a drop in market share that independents held to 25%. He explained the advantages of the independent market and explained the business plan by which he has, and now his son-in-law and children, followed in order to create a successful practice. Overall, the talk was one of the best recieved talks of the year and was widely enjoyed by the many members who came on the night. The AIO was also generous in sponsoring the Indian Social. Further to this, David Beaumont, generously donated a sum of £100.00 to the CHECT, BOOSA's chosen charity. We thank him for his generosity and time. This week Professor Mallen was invited to BOOSA to give a talk on the wonderful world of Academia. It was the first time such a talk was given to members. Going through his life, Professor Mallen highlighted all the avenues he went down till he reached his current position as Head of Bradford School of Optometry and Vision Sciences. The talk was very well received by all members and was highly enjoyable. Today, CooperVision came to pay a visit! The speakers talked about their wide range of work within the Optical World! From research to manufacturing, the speakers talked about the different aspects of the company's portfolio. They talked about Contact Lenses especially! Explaining, how the lenses work, CooperVision led an informative talk that was well received by all who attended! This week BOOSA invited ABDO (Association of British Dispensing Opticians) president Peter Black into talk to members about the Dispensing profession and the Optical profession as a whole. Reminding members of the importance of having Dispensing Opticians in practice, Peter Black explained the role of Dispensing Opticians as well as expressed his opinion on the future of Optics in the UK. The talk was well received by members and was most helpful in helping members to further their dispensing knowledge.
