Today, representatives from the Association of Independent Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians came in to talk about independent optometry market. Former Chairman of the AIO, David Beaumont led the lecture by explaining the drastic change in the Optical market resulting in a drop in market share that independents held to 25%. He explained the advantages of the independent market and explained the business plan by which he has, and now his son-in-law and children, followed in order to create a successful practice. Overall, the talk was one of the best recieved talks of the year and was widely enjoyed by the many members who came on the night. The AIO was also generous in sponsoring the Indian Social. Further to this, David Beaumont, generously donated a sum of £100.00 to the CHECT, BOOSA's chosen charity. We thank him for his generosity and time.
This week BOOSA invited ABDO (Association of British Dispensing Opticians) president Peter Black into talk to members about the Dispensing profession and the Optical profession as a whole. Reminding members of the importance of having Dispensing Opticians in practice, Peter Black explained the role of Dispensing Opticians as well as expressed his opinion on the future of Optics in the UK. The talk was well received by members and was most helpful in helping members to further their dispensing knowledge.
Following reports of a new Optometry Course being introduced at Hertfordshire University, BOOSA has launched a consultation to find out the general opinion. A statement as to BOOSA's position on the said matter will be released shortly after the consultation closes.
